Forensic Science

Learn more about the specialized roles that make up forensic teams and explore the scope of career opportunities within the field. Forensic scientists often work in laboratories using highly accurate instrumentation and collaborating with other well-trained specialists. By receiving basic training in the sciences and gaining hands-on experience in Bryant’s laboratories, you’ll be ready for advanced study as you prepare for your future career.  

The forensic science minor is recommended for students interested in careers involving law enforcement and medical investigations, including laboratory assessment of crime scene evidence. Students may choose to continue their studies after graduation in a specialized area such as trauma assessment, forensic photography, ballistics, medical entomology, geographical information systems (GIS) and mapping, bio-imaging, and DNA analysis. Forensic techniques can also be used to track industrial responsibility for toxic releases, assess engineering failures such as bridge or building collapses, and assist countries following natural disasters, disease outbreaks, or wars.

The forensic science minor includes three required courses:

• SCI 251/SCI L251: Principles of Biology and Laboratory: Learn about the fundamental principles of biology, including scientific methodology, biological classification and nomenclature, cell structure and function, cellular biochemistry, principles of energy and metabolism, genetics, aspects of ecology, and evolution. You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of life processes at the cellular and molecular level through direct, hands-on lab experience.
   
• SCI 265/SCI L265: Introductory Chemistry I and Laboratory: Learn about the fundamental concepts of chemistry: atomic and electronic structure, chemical bonding, simple reactions in organic chemistry, and chemical equilibria. Conduct hands-on experience in the laboratory to support your learning.
   
• SCI 368: Elements of Forensic Science: Gain an overview of forensic science, including strategies for identifying and solving complex problems, exposure to analytical tools used by forensic scientists, and the professional standards and ethical considerations guiding practitioners. 

Choose from one of two elective options to round out your minor:

• SCI 363/ SCI L363: Genetics and Genetics Laboratory: Study the fundamental concepts of genetics, including classical inheritance patterns, chromosomal rearrangement, mutations, and DNA repair. You’ll also learn about modern uses of genetics in biotechnology and genomics and use hands-on techniques such as genetic karyotyping, generation of Punnett squares, and DNA fingerprinting analyses.
   
• PSY 482: Forensic Psychology: This introductory course to the field of forensic psychology examines the current issues, theories, and interface between psychology and the legal system. You’ll explore a range of topics, including criminal profiling, the reliability of hypnosis, lie detection, eyewitness testimony, trial preparation and jury selection, the insanity defense, and more.
