About This Program

Data is a key resource for organizations today as technological innovation continues to evolve. As businesses aim to stay competitive, they need new techniques to harness and analyze their data. Through a major in data science, you’ll learn how to extract insights from vast amounts of data and translate that knowledge into tangible outcomes.

This interdisciplinary program draws on many fields, including mathematics and statistics, information technology, machine learning, programming, data engineering, predictive analytics, big data, and data visualization. Learn from faculty with advanced degrees and data scientists who consult and work within the industry. As a data science major, you will:

Develop skills to participate in analytics/big data lifecycle, from problem definition and data acquisition to the presentation of results.
Focus on actionable outcomes and how to communicate those results to stakeholders.
Prepare for certification in Python, Databricks, PowerBI, and other data analytic applications.
Engage in applied learning through the execution of real-world projects, such as acting as a consultant for a company or applying your skills at an internship or co-op.

Because the data science major is an interdisciplinary program, students are required to complete a business administration minor to gain a well-rounded understanding of basic business principles. Courses include:

As a data science major, you’ll put your knowledge into practice through the Data Science Capstone course. Work closely with industry, government, and academic partners to solve a real-world problem from start to finish: defining the problem or opportunity, collecting and processing actual data, selecting and applying state-of-the-art data science techniques, and identifying actionable results. This hands-on project will test your skills in data acquisition, pre-processing and cleaning, visualization, transformation, model building and refining, presentation, and storytelling — and give you critical experience as you prepare to transition to your future career.
